UK phone owners now have one less thing to worry about when travelling across the pond: British mobile operator Three has announced it is adding the US to its list of 'Feel at Home' free roaming destinations.

The Feel at Home program’s US inclusion means that Three’s customers can use their own UK allowance of calls, texts and data while roaming in the States, at no extra charge - a great early Christmas present for anyone with holiday travel plans.

When customers arrive in the US (or at any one of the 10 other countries included in Three’s program), their phone will connect to a local network, but without the expensive roaming fees typically associated with using your phone overseas.

Calls and SMS to non-UK numbers will be charged at regular roaming rates; however, customers can call and text back home to the UK for the same rate in the US as they’d pay domestically.

Data will also be offered at no additional cost, eliminating the inconvenient and extremely pricey need to purchase data add-ons, or pay for data by the MB, in order to browse the web abroad.

All Three customers – personal, business, and pay-as-you-go – will have access to Feel at Home, provided they've activated international roaming on their device.

If customers do exceed their monthly allowances while roaming, they’ll be charged at a rate lower than Three’s standard international roaming fees.

While a number of carriers are providing cheaper roaming services for customers travelling throughout Europe, Three is the first UK operator to offer its customers the same rates in the US as they're paying back home .

Three customers will also now be able to access Feel at Home roaming in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Macau, as well as the previously included destinations Australia, Italy, Austria, Hong Kong, Sweden, Denmark and the Republic of Ireland.

With T-Mobile US launching a similar offer for its customers, and the European Union making plans to abolish roaming charges within member countries, fingers crossed that more operators worldwide follow suit in the near future.
