It's official: Android N is Nougat

01 July 2016

Google has finally revealed its chosen dessert-themed nickname for the upcoming Android N: say hello to Android Nougat.

The announcement occurred live across Google’s Snapchat and Twitter, after months of speculation and suggestions from Android fans.

Nougat was just one of many potential nicknames proposed by the general public, including Nutella, Neapolitan, and Noaty McNoatface (!). Google has now unveiled an all-new Android Nougat statue outside its California HQ.

Android Nougat is the 12th version of Android to receive a sugary-sweet nickname. Here’s the full list of monikered Androids preceding Nougat:

  • Android 1.5 Cupcake
  • Android 1.6 Donut
  • Android 2.0 Éclair
  • Android 2.2 Froyo
  • Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread
  • Android 3.0 Honeycomb
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • Android 4.4 KitKat
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Also confirmed? That the Nougat update will be Android 7.0. Google has already given users a sneak peek at what to expect form the next Android, including new multi-window support, ‘bundled’ notifications, picture-in-picture viewing, and a new virtual reality mode.

Android users can also look forward to improved graphics thanks to new Vulkan APIs, seamless system updates, and over 250 features and improvements – including all-new emoji
