Social media exists for only two real reasons: for narcissists to spam your feed with self-portraits, and for everybody else to share photos of their pets being adorable.

If you’re wondering if there’s a way to combine the two, too bad: somebody already beat you to it. Snapcat (see what they did there?) is the self-proclaimed ‘first social photo sharing app just for cats’.

The app allows your kitty to shoot selfies by flashing an attention-drawing icon on your phone’s screen. Your cat paws the dot, causing your device’s front-facing camera to snap a photo, and there you have it – instant cat selfie.

Users can then access their cat’s pictures by hitting their phone’s volume button. Photos can be edited using Aviary, then shared to either Facebook, Twitter or EyeEm, an Instagram-like photo-sharing social network (which coincidentally, happens to employ SnapCat’s developers).

It’s a cute concept that makes us wonder what other animal-themed apps could pop up in the future. Maybe Instaham – the photo-sharing app for pigs? The introduction of a birds-only social network, leading to Tweets literally being tweets?

Perhaps soon, duckfaces on Facebook will be replaced by actual duck faces.

The cat's meow

The app was created in less than 24 hours as an entry in a competition called Photo Hack Day. Unsurprisingly, Snapcat was one of the winners, and since becoming available in the Google Play Store has been downloaded over 10,000 times.

Despite the obvious genius of the idea, there are negatives. User reviews for the app have been mixed, and we’d like to see more social network integration (and not just EyeEm promotion).

If you have a particularly vicious feline, you may wish to avoid Snapcat altogether for the sake of maintaining a scratch-free screen.

We also feel the app would work equally well for small dogs and children with ADHD.

Snapcat is free to download, but is currently only available for Android devices. iOS, Windows Phone and Blackberry users will, for now, need to continue photographing their cats the old-fashioned way.
