Cogeco is an internet service provider (ISP) that offers internet services to parts of Ontario and Quebec, but like any internet provider, their services can experience frustrating outages from time to time.

There are a few ways to check if your Cogeco internet is down, including using their website or social media channels. You can also troubleshoot an internet outage by resetting your modem or testing your Cogeco internet speed.

Read on to learn how to check to see if Cogeco internet is down, as well as how to improve your Cogeco internet plan.

How to know if Cogeco internet is down

A good first step when investigating a potential outage is to reach out to neighbours using Cogeco internet to see if  there's a widespread outage. You can also check the Cogeco website and app to see if any outages are showing in your area or visit Cogeco's Twitter to see if other users have already flagged potential service issues. Downdetector, a resource that identifies outages thanks to user submissions, is another tool to keep in mind.

If you suspect you're dealing with some technical difficulties instead of a full-blown outage, try the following steps:

  1. Close and reopen your app or browser that can’t connect.
  2. Restart your device that can’t connect.
  3. Unplug your modem, plug it back in, then reconnect.

How to reset your Cogeco modem

Cogeco has two modem models, but you can reset them the same way. Follow these steps to reset your Cogeco modem:

  1. Find a toothpick, straightened paperclip, or another small item capable of fitting into the reset hole.
  2. Insert the item for three seconds. Holding it in for longer may factory reset your modem to its default network name and password.

Cogeco customer support

Contact Cogeco support if your internet remains down after trying to resolve the issue. If there is not an outage, but your hardware isn’t working, we strongly recommend having a Cogeco technician assist so your warranties aren’t voided by trying to repair the modem on your own.

Test your Cogeco internet speed

Hopefully, we’ve helped you get back online. If your internet connection is back, let’s test it. WhistleOut’s speed test will let you know your download speed, upload speed, and latency, so you’ll know if your plan is living up to its claims. It’s normal for your internet speeds to range from 60-90% of your advertised plan, so don’t be too alarmed if your tests don’t quite deliver the speeds that you were expecting.

Add a Wi-Fi extender

Adding a Wi-Fi booster or extender to your current network setup can help your devices stay connected in even the furthest corners of your home. These devices extend your network’s coverage area, which in turn increases your internet speeds in the areas furthest away from your modem. We’ve rounded up the best Wi-Fi extenders on the market so that you can find the one that makes the most sense for you, like the TP-Link RE650, which is our pick for the best Wi-Fi extender in Canada.

Find a better internet plan

There are plenty of great ISPs available with different plan options available for you. While we think Cogeco’s internet is solid, looking for something with a faster speed, better prices, or newer technology never hurts. If you live in an area where fibre internet or 5G internet is available, you may see an increase in your network’s reliability and speed. There could be a few reasons for why your Cogeco Wi-Fi is not working. First try looking on Cogeco's Twitter account to see if there's an outage. If there's not, try restarting your device.
