Article Summary
The best smartphone data plan on Telus is the Peace of Mind 10GB plan for $75/month. You add up to six tablets, smartwatches or the TELUS Drive+ system for no additional monthly fee when you upgrade to Peace of Mind Connect. Mobile Hotspot is available as a fixed or flex data plan, but you may find better prices with the competition.
Telus offers data plans for all the ways we use mobile technology today, including tablets, hotspots, smartwatches, and even connected cars. Some plans require a business account instead of a personal one, and most require a shared smartphone data plan on the same account.
If you're a heavy data user on your Telus smartphone plan, consider adding a tablet or smartwatch. Data can be cheaper than separate plans and you'll connect more devices on Canada's most reliable national carrier.
Smartphone Data Plans
Telus offers three kinds of smartphone plans with talk, text and data:
- Simple Share plans let you bundle data to share across multiple smartphone plans. For a small additional fee (usually $10/month) you can also share your data with tablets, smartwatches like the Apple Watch, or the Telus Drive+ system that turns your car into a mobile hotspot
- Peace of Mind plans give you up to 50GB of high-speed LTE data on Canada's largest 4G-LTE network. After that, you get unlimited data at slower speeds for the rest of your billing month. Data is not shareable with other devices.
- Peace of Mind Connect plans also give you unlimited data, but you can add up to six tablets, smartwatches and cars using a Telus Drive+ device.
If you're just looking for something for yourself then get a Peace of Mind plan. Starting at $75/month for 10GB of high speed LTE on Canada's fastest network, you can continue to upload and download even after hitting that monthly data cap. Speeds are reduced to 512 kbps, but that's still fast enough to browse the internet, upload photos and stream music.
Tablet Data Plans
Telus doesn't offer stand-alone tablet plans for individual users, but they have more options if you have a business account. The $30 Peace of Mind for Business - Tablet plan lets you download up to 5GB at full LTE speeds for $30/month. If you burn through that, then you still get unlimited data throttled at 512 kbps.
If you have a personal smartphone on a Simple Share data plan then you can get a $10/month tablet plan that shares that data and even adds an extra 1GB to your plan. If unlimited data is more your thing, consider signing up for any Peace of Mind Connect plan. You will be able to connect your LTE-enabled tablet to share up to 50GB of full-speed data at no additional monthly cost.
Hotspot Data Plans
Telus offers mobile internet plans for business users that are affordable and portable. The best option for a mobile internet data hotspot is Mobile Internet Fixed Plans which start at $40/month for 2GB of data. Telus also offers Mobile Internet Flex plans if you think you may use less data or your data usage varies from month-to-month:
- $10/month up to 100MB
- $30/month up to 500MB
- $45/month up to 2GB
- $70/month up to 6GB
- $85/month up to 10GB
If you go over 10GB on a Flex plan, you'll be charged 5 cents per megabyte... that's $50 per GB. Other carriers have better-priced plans than this. Even the Telus Tablet plan is far, far better. If you want to stick with Telus, see if they'll give you the 5GB Peace of Mind Tablet - Business plan on a mobile internet device.
Smartwatch Data Plans
Telus is one of the only carriers in Canada that supports the new Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch. The carrier offers a $10/month smartwatch plan that adds 1GB of shareable data to accounts with a Simple Share cell phone plan.
A even better deal is to put your smartphone on a Peace of Mind Connect plan. You get up to 50GB of high-speed LTE data that you can share that with your smartwatch at no additional monthly cost (with one-time activation fee of $35). Even if you go over your monthly data cap, there's no overage fees. Your uploads and downloads are slowed down but you'll remain connected throughout your billing period.
Telus Network Coverage
Telus Mobility covers more Canadians than Rogers, and has been rated a more reliable network than Bell. As such, Telus is your best choice for national coverage and a wide variety of data options to suit your needs. They're currently testing 5G technologies and will be rolling it out over the next few years for even better service.
