Adobe has kicked in the towel when it comes to its mobile Flash service, finally admitting that a focus on HTML5 makes more sense when it comes to mobile video content. It won’t mean much to iPhone users, but for many Android fans Flash support was one of the bigger reasons to make the switch between the two competing Android and iOS operating systems (OSes).

While it’s true that Flash support was only ever at best passable on high-end Android devices it was getting better with each passing generation. Now, it seems, that Adobe has decided to lay down its sword and admit defeat in its long running battle with Apple.

The news is both good and bad. Obviously we feel for the Adobe Flash employees who have lost their jobs, as well as the myriad of mobile Flash app developers who have suddenly become redundant overnight. But on the other hand Flash was always an extremely demanding service for what it provided. As far as functionality and efficiency go it seems that HTML5 has all the cards, so it really does make sense for Adobe to make the switch just as HTML5 is really starting to pick up steam.

In case any of you current Android users out there are worried there’s no cause for concern just yet. All current devices with Flash support will continue to be able to run Flash content, just don’t expect to see too many new Flash updates coming out for your device in the near future.

There’s obviously going to be a bit of a transition period, as many of the sites most of us frequent are still heavy on Flash content. But as HTML5 continues to cover more ground things should pretty much return to normal.

Of course Flash support will continue for desktops and laptops, it’s only the mobile version of the service that is being taken out to the back paddock. But it definitely seems like the Apple fanbois finally got one over their Android counterparts.

Flash, one of Android’s biggest and most commonly used boasts when comparing itself to iOS, is dead.
