Chatr Mobile’s prepaid plans offer solid deals on 4G data, coverage on a nationwide network, and unlimited talk and text. We’re impressed with the carrier’s affordability and range of plans.

What we like: Affordable prepaid plans

Chatr’s biggest strength is pricing. It has numerous affordable plans to meet a wide range of different customers’ needs. The cheapest Chatr prepaid plan is just $15 a month and offers 100 Canada-wide minutes and unlimited international text. We also especially like the value of the $35 Nationwide Talk, Text & 4G Data plan, which provides  of 4G data and unlimited talk and text. Customers looking for a big chunk of monthly data can enjoy the $75 Nationwide + US Talk, Text & 4G Data plan, which offers  of 4G data and unlimited talk and text.

Chatr’s plans are especially cheap in Quebec, thanks to the low prices of regional carriers like Videotron and Freedom Mobile. The Quebec-exclusive $45 Nationwide Talk, Text & 4G Data plan is especially good, with unlimited talk and text plus  of 4G data.

What we like: All plans are BYOP

It’s no secret that the best cell phone plans in Canada offer bring your own phone (BYOP). Customers who bring their own device avoid high monthly payments and unforeseen fees. All Chatr Mobile plans allow customers to bring their own devices. Even better: The carrier allows customers to keep their phone number with just a few easy steps.

What we don't like: Limited smartphone options

Chatr’s options for smartphones are rather limited, with just a few low-cost options available. The best is the Motorola Moto G Play, which you can pair with a plan for . Another solid option is the Samsung Galaxy A03s, available for $199 upfront. Unfortunately, there are no Chatr Mobile smartphones available for financing.

What we don't like: Limited number of 4G plans

We love that Chatr offers Canadians data on the cheap, but we don’t love that their best plans are limited to 3G speeds. While 3G is fast enough to browse the web, it makes streaming music or video a frustrating experience. Considering affordable 4G plans are available through other flankers like Fido, Koodo, and Virgin Plus, we think capping plans at 3G speeds is a big downside.

Chatr Mobile vs. Public Mobile

Public Mobile is a flanker brand operating on Telus’ nationwide 4G network. Like Chatr, Public offers prepaid plans at 4G and 3G speeds and low prices for basic plans like the $25 Unlimited Canada-Wide Talk + Text + 1GB plan. Unlike Chatr, Public offers far more smartphone options for customers to pair with plans. There is a catch, though: Public phones are refurbished, which means they’re pre-owned and have been restored to their original factory settings. That means you can pick up some higher-end phones for a lot less than their original price. Overall, Public is the better option here. The carrier offers more value with its plans and more options for picking up inexpensive devices.

Chatr Mobile vs. Lucky Mobile

Lucky Mobile operates on the Bell network, with 4G and 3G data plans starting as low as $15 a month. The best Lucky Mobile prepaid plan is the $43 Unlimited Canada-wide Calling Plan, which offers 80GB of data and unlimited talk and text. Customers interested in more data might like the $70 Unlimited Canada-wide & US Calling Plan, which offers  of 4G data. 

Lucky Mobile’s options for smartphones are not much different from Chatr, with a similar selection and nearly identical pricing. The best option is the Motorola Moto G Pure, which you can pair with a plan for .

In many respects, Lucky Mobile and Chatr are very similar carriers. The key difference is data: Lucky has far more plans with bigger data chunks at 4G speeds. If you’re spending the same amount of money, you might as well get more for it. The winner here is Lucky Mobile.
