Article Summary

Chatr launched a decade ago and has remained focused on providing low-cost plans for Canadians. There is no long term commitment, so there are no two-year contracts when you buy a new phone. There is a small selection of cheap devices to buy under $200 upfront. If you have your own phone, bring it to a Chatr sales representative to see if it will work.

Chatr provides basic prepaid services for Canadians at affordable prices. Service is provided on the Rogers 4G-LTE network, but mobile data is throttled to a slow 3.0 Mbps. It's good for streaming music or basic web browsing, but video streams may play at lower quality or not at all.

There are very limited options when shopping for a new phone with Chatr; there are only a few phone models available. However, if you have another phone compatible with the Rogers Wireless network (like an old phone gathering dust) then Chatr will sell you a SIM card for $10 that lets you bring your own device.

Since Chatr only has prepaid plans, there are no deals that let you offset the price of a new phone on a 2-year term. However, if you set up a pre-authorized credit card payment then you receive bonus data and can still cancel your service any time.

Smartphones For Sale by Chatr

Android's open architecture allows cell phone manufacturers to build low-cost, affordable devices that still have features once only available on premium smartphones. The devices available through Chatr cost $150 or less, but run older versions of Android. You can still download popular apps like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, but intensive 3D games will not likely play well. The camera hardware takes adequate photos and video for chats. A long-lasting battery, fingerprint security and HD screen are options available only on premium smartphones only a few years ago. At Chatr you can get a smartphone with these features for cheap.

The flip phone format makes it comfortable for long talks, it's future-proof with LTE service so you'll always have excellent coverage throughout Canada, and the secondary display on the outside shows you who's calling without having to open the phone. There's also that satisfying *snap* when you shut your phone when hanging up. The simple flip phone supports a mobile data connection for basic email and browsing. Put it on a cheap talk, text and data AutoPay plan and you'll walk out of the store having spent less than a hundred bucks.
