Adobe has kicked in the towel when it comes to its mobile Flash service, finally admitting that a focus on HTML5 makes more sense when it comes to mobile video content. It won’t mean much to iPhone users, but for many Android fans Flash support was one of the bigger reasons to make the switch between the two competing Android and iOS operating systems (OSes).
Let’s face it, the iOS rumor mill is never going to stop. This week we’ve got a few new ones to report on. If you haven’t heard of Siri then we’d usually ask you where you’ve been hiding yourself for the last couple of months, but seeing as we have a bit to go through we’ll just quickly fill you in. Siri is Apple’s brand new Native Talk app, that allows users an impressive range of functionality simply by speaking to their iPhone 4S handsets. We know what you’re thinking; that you’ve heard this all before and voice-command interfaces always turn out to be all talk and no action. Well by all accounts Siri actually works really well and seems to be the most impressive voice recognition integration anyone has yet seen on a smartphone.
Some snapshots of the HTC Edge have made their way on to the web along with some already wide-spread rumors that it will be HTC’s very first quad-core phone. Interestingly enough the rumors state that the Edge will be sporting a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chip, rather than a Qualcomm CPU.
Motorola has announced its next 2 tablets: the Motorola Xoom 2 and Motorola Xoom 2 Media Edition. Both tablets are looking at a mid-November release in the UK and we hope on a similar date in the rest of the world. Both 10.1 inch Motorola Xoom 2 and 8.2 inch Xoom 2 Media Edition seem to sport the kind of specs one would expect from a new Xoom tablet. A super-fast, but not revolutionary dual-core 1.2GHz CPU will be available on both devices, as will 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Both tablets also reportedly sport “HD” displays, which we’re guessing is Motorola’s way of saying Honeycomb’s familiar 1280 x 800 resolution, but it could be higher.
LG has officially denied the rumours that its first dual-core smartphone, the LG Optimus 2X, will not be getting the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update that was recently announced. LG firmly denies the rumors that claim LG will not be providing the Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) OS update for the LG Optimus 2X. These rumors are NOT true. LG is currently in the process of planning the ICS OS update for the LG Optimus 2X as well as other LG high-end smartphones. Detailed information on the ICS OS update schedule for specific models will be announced, once the ICS OS is publicly released by Google. Please stay tuned for more updates from LG.
You’ve probably heard by now that Motorola is resurrecting its once mighty RAZR product line. Of course Moto has taken a slightly more modern design approach, ditching the iconic RAZR flip-phone form factor for a slate-style smartphone template. What we were surprised to hear is that Motorola has managed to keep the profile of its newest RAZR device down to a stunning 7.1mm, a full 1.4mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy S II.
The first ever Google Nexus devices, the Google Nexus One, finally looks to have reached the end of the line. Google has confirmed that Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich will not be coming to the iconic device. It’s not for lack of trying, or by any kind of economically-driven laziness on Google’s part; the specs of the Nexus One just aren’t up to the task.
Nokia has finally announced and demonstrated its two first Windows Phone Mango releases: The Nokia Lumia 710 and Nokia Lumia 800. The Lumia 800 appears to be the higher end of the two, sporting a single-score 1.4GHz processor, 3.8 inch AMOLED display with Clear Black support and a convexly curved screen which is supposed to not only add to aesthetic value, but also improve the swiping experience when moving your fingers around the display.
Our regular readers would have noticed an unusual amount of inactivity on our tech blog this last 2 weeks. The reason for this temporary silence is pretty simple; I was on holidays. I had the unique misfortune of planning and booking a holiday smack bang on top of 2 of the biggest news weeks in mobile news history several months in advance. An unfortunate coincidence for which you all have my apologies.
The HTC Sensation is the current flagship phone for HTC and replacing the HTC Desire as HTC’s top selling and largest handset. With its powerful CPU, impressive screen and stylishly machined body the Sensation is certainly a contender in the top-end of the smartphone market, but does it have what it takes to knock out other dual-core leaders? We take a look in our HTC Sensation Review.
