No, you don’t need to buy a new phone from Virgin Plus. All wireless plans at Virgin Plus are available at the same cost when you bring your own phone (BYOP). You might need to unlock your device if you purchased it from a carrier other than Virgin Plus or Bell Mobility more than four years ago.
Yes, you can keep your phone number when switching to (or away from) Virgin Plus! You own your phone number, not Virgin Plus or any other carrier. Switching to another carrier is easy; you don’t need permission from your old carrier and can keep your old number. If you’re still paying off a phone on a two-year contract, there may be cancellation fees to pay.
Yes, Virgin Plus charges for data overages—and watch out for them! Competitors, including Koodo and Fido, pause the ability to download when you reach your data cap each month, but not Virgin Plus. You’ll receive a text notification to let you know data is running out, but if you go over your data cap, the carrier charges you $15 per 100MB up to 800MB. After that, it’s $0.15/MB. Thanks to the Canadian Wireless Code of Conduct, Virgin Plus cannot charge you more than $50 in data overage fees without consent.
Yes. You can refer a friend to Virgin Plus, at which point you will each receive a $50 bill credit over ten months. If it’s family, and you want to share a single bill, you can receive a $5 credit for each additional line you add.

Virgin Plus Customer Service and Reputation

Virgin Plus (formerly Virgin Mobile) ranks highly for overall customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power and Associates studies. The carrier ranked better than every other major wireless provider from 2017–2020. In 2021, it dropped to second place behind Quebec-based Videotron but remains at the top of the list for customer satisfaction among Canada-wide cell phone providers.

Why Choose Virgin Plus?

Bell Mobility owns Virgin Plus and provides customers extensive coverage on its nationwide 4G LTE network. Virgin Plus plans include premium features and speed for a fraction of the cost you’d have to pay top-tier providers. New customers may select from a wide range of smartphones on two-year contracts. Payments for these devices can cost a few bucks per month for low-end models or a bit higher if you select from the newest premium devices, like the Apple iPhone.

Every monthly subscriber is a Virgin Plus VIP member with great benefits, including contests, exclusive events, and discounts on clothing and restaurant dining. Partner your mobile plan with home internet and live IPTV service to get all your entertainment expenses on one bill.

Most Virgin Plus members select a monthly postpaid plan, but more options are available. WhistleOut Canada has our recommended Virgin Plus plans, but your needs may be unique. All Virgin Plus customers can choose from Starter plans, Value plans, prepaid contracts, and even home phone service.

Value plans

Power users and commuters who want to keep up with the latest Netflix show should consider a Value plan. You don’t need a premium carrier plan with unlimited 5G data when Virgin Plus gives you lots of fast data and nationwide coverage on Canada’s largest 4G LTE network. Subscribers can pay month-to-month or buy a new phone on a two-year contract with Value plans.

Prepaid plans

While Virgin Plus isn’t known for its prepaid plans, several options are worth considering. Prepaid plans include voicemail, call display, and most also include nationwide long-distance. You don’t need a credit check to get a Virgin Plus prepaid SIM card; using one is a great way to stay on budget.

Home phone

Landline telephones are so 20th century, but they can be useful as a family line or for seniors who feel more comfortable with a good ol’ telephone. Residents of Alberta, B.C. and parts of Quebec can sign up for a home phone line that uses the Virgin Plus wireless network. This service includes nationwide long-distance, and you can add international long-distance packs to call distant family members from the comfort of your living room.
