A new rumor has crept up on the web and it’s that Apple’s upcoming iOS5 update will not be made available to iPhone 3GS users. The comment originated from renowned tech-news insider Eldar Murtazin’s Twitter account. “Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3GS won’t be upgradable to iOS5.x. iPhone 4 will.”
The HTC Salsa is set to be released soon and carry on the strong-chinned legacy of the HTC Hero and HTC Legend, although with somewhat less focus on the unique case design and more on social networking (the iconic chin has seen a definite decrease in size when compared previous models). Also noticeable is the lack of any trackball or touchpad at the base of the device, HTC opting to instead include a dedicated Facebook button that lights up at different times, but more on that later.
Toshiba has entered the fight for pixilation supremacy with a bang, showing off a range of LCD screens for smartphones with a whopping density of 367 pixels per inch (ppi). In other terms that’s a resolution of 720 x 1280 crammed on to a 4 inch screen.
Windows Phone 7 is about to get its first major update: Mango. Until now there have been nothing but minor bug fixes released for the WP7 platform so when we heard about the Mango update we were understandably excited. Windows Phone 7 has the makings of a solid and fantastic mobile operating system (OS), but as it stands it gives a bit of an unfinished feel when it comes to functionality. Sure, the elegant appearing UI and funkily unique Start screen give the impressive of a polished product, but the truth of it is that WP7 is still in its infancy and as such has a tendency to fall down every once in a while.
Adobe has released the latest update for their Android platform Flash player. Unfortunately this version doesn’t seem to be as big a change as 10.2 was compared to Flash 10.1. No real new features or redesigns this time, just some minor bug fixes and a general smoothing out of wrinkles.
Samsung make their fair share of concept screens. Paper-thin AMOLEDs, transparent displays that are powered by ambient lighting, spray on quantum dot displays and now a foldable AMOLED screen. The screen itself boasts some pretty impressive colours and clarity, oh, and did we mention that it folds? By which we didn’t mean it’s a dual-screen display with a hinge in the middle like the Sony S2. No, this screen actually folds in the middle and has showed no signs of wear and tear even after 100 000 tries.
The HTC Desire HD is the natural successor to HTC’s old flagship phone – the HTC Desire. The Desire HD is very similar to the Desire in many respects. However, the improvements implemented in the Desire HD are definitely noticeable such as the larger screen, brighter display and Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system.
Android has announced their first update to the Android Honeycomb 3.0 platform and it’s called… Android Honeycomb 3.1. That’s right, no fancy names like Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread here, possibly because Google is planning to supersede Honeycomb in the near future.
Google has just announced the next update to the Android dessert menu: Ice Cream Sandwich. Also known as Android 2.4, Ice Cream Sandwich is taking a slightly different angle than other Android updates have in the past. Rather than focusing purely on upgrading performance and adding new services, Google has said that they’re now focusing on unifying Android devices under one banner: Ice Cream Sandwich.
The web is abuzz with rumors today that Microsoft could be buying the popular VoIP service Skype. Skype is a world-wide communication program that allows users to chat with either text, voice or over video completely free of charge. It has been steadily climbing in popularity for years now and has recently received somewhat of a boom when it finally freed itself from an exclusivity agreement with Verizon.
