Google has finally started rolling out its Android 2.3.4 update for the Google Nexus S.
The Android 2.3.4 update is important for one major reason; it will give users the option to talk with Video Chat. Google Talk is a video chat service that is very similar to FaceTime, a current and popular functionality of the iPhone operating system. Not only that, but Google Talk includes free instant messaging and audio chat between anyone with Android 2.3.4 and higher.
As can be expected, Google Talk will hit Google's own Nexus S first, as the Nexus S uses the stock Google Android user interface (UI). Anyone else with a Google Gingerbread (Android 2.3) device will have to wait a while until their specific manufacturer manages to adapt the update to their own UIs and then wait a little more until their carrier releases it.
The update will be 12MB, so don't fret about going over your cap. You shouldn't even have to connect to a computer, as 12MB is generally well within the recommended limits for downloading over 3G.
Google assures us that the 2.3.4 update will not adversely affect any of the apps or information currently stored on your device, unless you've rooted it in which case the results could be unpredictable.
If you own a Google Nexus one you'll apparently be able to make the upgrade to Gingerbread soon, although if that means 2.3 without Google Talk or 2.3.4 with Google Talk is anyone's guess.
