Article Summary
Freedom Mobile once offered a lot of data-only plans with affordable per-minute talk time. Almost all of those are gone now, but their regular smartphone plans are still some of the most affordable ways to put mobile data on a smartphone, tablet or mobile internet device.
Freedom Mobile provides high speed LTE service to most major cities and towns throughout Ontario, BC and Alberta. Outside their network they have partner carriers that let you continue to use your service. Many plans include roaming talk and data, and all plans include unlimited or cheap pay-as-you-go talk throughout Canada.
Freedom Mobile was the first carrier to offer data-only plans to smartphones. They will never charge you for extra data once you hit your cap unless you're on a prepaid plan. After your monthly data cap is hit, the mobile data keeps coming but at a slower rate.
Smartphone Data-Only Plans
Freedom Mobile offer limited plans that feature only mobile data but no outgoing calls. Unlimited incoming calls and can text anywhere are included. Outgoing nationwide calls can still be made for only $0.05/minute. There's no data coverage on the Freedom Nationwide network. Their Big Data plan can include of data on the Freedom network plus another 500MB when roaming nationwide for only /month.
Most plans at Freedom Mobile include unlimited talk and text. Postpaid smartphone plans will throttle data to 256 kbps after you hit your monthly data cap but you are still connected to the internet. That's slower than the unlimited data plans from Rogers, Bell or Telus. Prepaid plans with Freedom Mobile don't include any data after you hit your monthly data cap.
Best Tablet Data Plan
While not officially supported, current LTE-enabled tablets should work on Freedom's smartphone Older 3G tablets might not be supported, so Freedom Mobile recommends you bring it into a store to test with a SIM card and make sure the device is compatible.
Best Hotspot Data Plan
Just like tablets, Freedom Mobile doesn't officially support USB or WiFi mobile hotspots on their smartphone plans. However, if it takes a SIM card you can bring it into any Freedom Mobile shop and they'll test it to see if you can get online with one of their data plans.
Freedom Mobile Network Coverage
Freedom Mobile has a strong presence in large cities and towns throughout Ontario, BC, and Alberta. Many plans feature roaming benefits like extra data and low per-minute voice calls if you find yourself on a partner network elsewhere in Canada. Freedom is currently rolling out Extended LTE service to provide superior signal in high-density areas for phones that support the technology.
