Article Summary
Motorola has launched nationwide their most full-featured discount smartphone ever. Even with a 13MP camera, 5.7" HD+ screen, Android 9 (Pie) and the same CPU as its big brother, the moto g7 play costs as little as $250 outright and is available from four major carriers for $0/month on two year plans.
In February of this year, Motorola announced their new g7 family of smartphones (not to be confused with LG's line of G7 flagship phones with a similar name). Last year's Motorola moto g6 line focused on large batteries, but the moto g6 play model was under-powered. Even so, it made more than one Editor's Choice list on WhistleOut for its stunning value and features on a sub-$300 phone.
This year, Motorola reduced the size of the battery in the moto g7 play but gave it far better hardware. The Snapdragon 632 CPU is the same processor you find in the full-speed moto g7 but for $100 less. With eight cores, the moto g7 play sips power when it's just sitting in your pocket checking email, and goes into overdrive when you need real processing speed.
You can buy the moto g7 play outright for around $250 at Bell and Virgin Mobile, or $300 at Rogers and Fido stores. All phones sold in Canada are unlocked when you buy them, even if you get it on a 2-year plan. If you pay for it upfront then you can then use this capable phone with any major carrier in Canada.
If you choose to sign up for two years then you will get the phone for $0 upfront and plans from Virgin Mobile or Fido only cost $10/month more than if you buy the phone outright. That works out to $240 over twenty-four months. Bell and Rogers will give you the phone for $0 down on a talk and text plan as cheap as $25/month.
Considering most flagship phones from Apple, Samsung and others can cost over $1,000, and buying one for $0 down can add $40/month or more to a cell phone plan, the moto g7 play is a refreshing option to the overpriced Canadian market.
