Fido is one of the biggest cell phone providers in Canada, offering competitive pricing and 4G LTE coverage on the Rogers network. Our favourite Fido plan is the Data, Talk & Text Plan with 20GB, which offers a hefty chunk of 4G LTE data for $34/month. It's so good we placed it among the best cell phone plans in Canada.

If you want more data for only a little more money, we also like the Data, Talk & Text Plan with 50GB, which is currently marked down to just $44/month. If you want to save money and pick up a new smartphone in the process, check out the Prepaid Talk & Text Data Plan, which gives you unlimited minutes and messages for $24/month.

How we picked the best Fido plans

  • Price & value
We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price, and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated the carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras and perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Data, Talk & Text Plan with 20GB | $34/month

  • Pros: Bring your own phone, cheap 4G LTE data
  • Cons: No 5G connectivity

This plan is hard to beat. You get unlimited talk and unlimited international texting, the ability to bring your own phone, and a seriously cheap monthly rate on Rogers' vast 4G LTE network, which means you'll get great coverage in almost every corner of Canada. While it might be tempting to spring for a plan with more data, keep in mind that the average Canadian only uses 6GB of data per month. By comparison, this plan will be over three times what the average user needs.

Some folks might scoff at the fact that Fido's plans don't allow for 5G speeds, but we don't think that's a dealbreaker, as most people find 4G LTE to be more than fast enough. The plan also allows you to finance over 100 new smartphones, though we recommend you BYOD if you have an old one at home.

Data, Talk & Text Plan with 50GB | $44/month

  • Pros: Large data allotment, reliable coverage, cheap monthly payment
  • Cons: No 5G connectivity

If you're looking for more data, this is your best bet. The Data, Talk & Text Plan with 50GB is ideal for serious streamers, gamers, and professionals working from home. It gives you enough data to ensure you'll never exceed your monthly cap. For a limited time, Fido's offering a seriously discounted price on new activations, marking this plan down to just $44/month, a price that's significantly cheaper than comparable ones from the Big Three

Like the other Data, Talk & Text Plan, you'll need to bring your own phone and activate online to get this low rate, which means adding a new device to your new plan isn't an option.

Cell Phone Plan

Prepaid Talk & Text Plan | $24/month

  • Pros: Great value, unlimited international texting and Canada-wide calling
  • Cons: No data

If you're looking for a basic plan for an aging parent or a young child, this Fido option is perfect. $24/month gives your phone unlimited talk and text, allowing the user to stay connected no matter where they are. The plan doesn't include monthly data, though you can purchase data add-on packs through Fido if need be.

You can bring your own phone or add one to your plan, though there's no financing option, so you'll be forced to pay outright. That's not such a bad deal when you consider some of the low-cost smartphones available, like the TCL Flip or the Motorola Moto G Play.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best Fido cell phone plans. We compared plans by analyzing their coverage, cost, and plan options. We considered plan-specific elements, including perks, and premium data allowances. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, including customer feedback, we picked the plans we feel meet the needs of most people.
