Text Family Plan Savings with Freedom Mobile over image of two people using smartphones

Article Summary

Freedom Mobile lets you add multiple lines on one account. Savings increase with the more lines you add; 2 lines save $2 on each line, 3 lines save $3 each, $4 on 4 lines and $5 each on 5 lines or more. There are no data sharing options, but Freedom Mobile plans offer more data for a fraction of the price found with the national carriers. There's also a referral program that can save you up to $120/year.

Family Share plans have become associated with data sharing, but there's other ways to save money by combining more than one mobile plan on a single account. Freedom Mobile believes in giving every plan a lot of data for a low price. You can outfit everyone in your house with their own plan that costs less but provides more data than most plans with Rogers, Bell or Telus.

Every monthly plan included unlimited data throttled at 256kbps even when you go over your full-speed data limit. You'll never have to worry about sharing data or data overages when your family is on Freedom Mobile.

Freedom Mobile and Data Sharing

Freedom Mobile doesn't offer data sharing across multiple lines on the same account. In fact, the president of wireless at Shaw Communications (Freedom's parent company) has been quite vocal about how unfair Family Share plans can be.

While they don't offer data sharing plans, Freedom offers a few alternatives for families:

Big Data, Low Price

With the Big Gig plans, you can put gigabytes of mobile data on your smartphone for as little as $40/month. By comparison, plans from Rogers, Bell and Telus usually start at $70/month for 5GB.

Coverage on the Freedom Home network is limited. If you spend most of your life in major cities of Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta (as almost one-third of Canadians do) then you should get full 4G-LTE service. When roaming on partner networks, most plans include unlimited talk and text as well as some data.

If you rarely leave the city then you can get a plan for as little as $15/month that gets you unlimited data. Seriously!

Unlimited Data*

Every monthly plan at Freedom includes unlimited data. No exceptions. But there are conditions.

Every plan includes a set amount of data at full-speed on Freedom Mobile's LTE network. Speeds can hit around 200 Mbps. After you hit the monthly data cap then your speeds are slowed to 0.25 Mbps download. That's still fast enough to browse on social media apps, but too slow for online video streaming.

Unlimited data is available on the Freedom Mobile Home and Away networks. Once you leave the coverage area then you'll find yourself roaming on Freedom's Nationwide partner network. Unlimited data is still available to you, but this brings up another condition to Freedom Mobile's unlimited data.

Customers who use unlimited data excessively may find their connection slowed down even more. As part of Freedom's terms of use, they also reserve the right to disable Away data (or your account) if they find excessive unlimited data use on the Away network. This prevents people signing up to Freedom Mobile then taking the plan home to another province.

Even with those limitations, Freedom Mobile's unlimited data service ensures you never have to worry about surprise overage fees. You can keep downloading until the end of your billing month when full-speed downloads starts up again.

Discount For Additional Lines

Between huge data caps, low priced plans and unlimited throttled data, there's no need for Freedom Mobile to offer data sharing. Instead, they will offer you discounts when adding more lines to an account. The more you add, the more you save on every line.

  • 2 lines saves $2 off every line ($48/year)
  • 3 lines saves $3 off every line ($108/year)
  • 4 lines saves $4 off every line ($192/year)
  • 5 or more lines saves $5 off every line ($300+/year)

The discounts only apply to postpaid lines (no discounts on prepaid services).

Tablet Plans on Freedom Mobile

Freedom Mobile offers a tablet plan as well, giving you 4GB of data for $15/month. Unlike similar deals from Fido, Koodo and Virgin Mobile, you don't need to be an existing customer to get this plan. However, there are some really tight conditions:

  • Data is only available on the Freedom Network - no nationwide coverage
  • Plan can only be used on a Samsung Galaxy Tablet that you can buy from Freedom Mobile
  • The tablet costs $279 upfront or is free when you sign a 24-month contract
  • Freedom Mobile reserves the right to cancel your plan if they find you're using it on another device

Referral Program: Earn Up To $250/year

Be a spokesperson for Freedom Mobile and get paid for it. If a friend, coworker, teammate or distant relative is looking to switch mobile carriers, tell them about your experience with Freedom.

Go to Freedom Mobile's Refer A Friend registration page and send them an invite. If they claim the offer (within 15 days) then they'll get a $25 credit when they sign up to Freedom Mobile. Even better, you will get a $25 credit too!

You can get up to $250 credit per year for use on your bill. That's a nice reward for helping your friends to save money.
