Some of us in the WhistleOut office are big fans of browser tabs - a feature available in most browsers nowadays, including Internet Explorer 7 and upwards. Note, if you are still on IE6, try your hardest to get off it and upgrade asap. The funeral has even happened. Get on it.

The browser tab is one of the essential tools of the multi-tasker (and the procrastinator) and we strategically use and abuse the ability to have multiple tabs open at once, usually up to the point that the browser crashes or seizes up (we're looking at you, Safari).

With their Chrome web browser, Google have released a new Chrome extension which allows you to be rewarded for opening lots of tabs, but only over the next 4 days (US dates) so you'll need to get on it, FAST. Your reward: Google will donate to a charity on your behalf, just for opening tabs.

The Chrome for Causes extension counts the amount of tabs that you have and Google will donate on your behalf.

Google Chrome

Perhaps, Google are trying to do some things in response to mounting stories about Google favouring its own properties in their search results and other criticisms that the extremely powerful search company has come in for recently.

However, this little idea from Google seems like a ripper and we're getting behind as it is so easy that we don't need to change anything in the way we work.

Everyone’s total tabs will determine a charitable donation made on behalf of the Chrome community, up to one million dollars. Here's what your tabs can do:

  • 10 tabs = 1 tree planted
  • 10 tabs = 1 book published and donated
  • 25 tabs = 1 vaccination treatment provided
  • 100 tabs = 1 square foot of shelter built
  • 200 tabs = 1 person's clean water for a year

Up to a total of $1 million donated by Google from the 4 day window.
