Over the past 12 months Gorilla Glass has taken the mobile industry by storm. It’s a lightweight and extremely durable alternative to traditional glass panels on visual displays. It’s scratch resistant, impact resistant and pressure resistant, essentially making it a great choice for use on mobile phones, considering the hectic day-to-day nature of contemporary life. Not to mention the need to deal with the wear and tear of being kept in a pocket next to a set of keys, or being dropped on pavement repeatedly.

Now the makers of Gorilla Glass have demonstrated their newest invention, Gorilla Glass 2, at CES in Vegas. It has the potential to offer the same amount of scratch, impact and pressure resistance, but with a panel 20% thinner than the original Gorilla Glass formula.

Basically what this means is that Smartphones can become even thinner than we’ve been seeing. When companies battle to get the thinnest smartphone by just tenths of a mm, 20% thinner screens could mean a noticeable change.

It might sound silly to the average reader and in truth it still does to us a bit. But we have to admit that we have noticed and appreciated the slimness of handsets that we’ve reviewed. Slimmer generally means that a phone can be larger in its other dimensions without becoming too uncomfortable in the pocket. It also means that thicker, more protective cases can be utilised without creating discomfort or unwieldiness.

We won’t say we’re excited about Gorilla Glass 2, but we’re definitely happy to hear that impact resistance in displays is a continuing front of innovation. Perhaps, one day, we’ll find ourselves sitting around laughing about the old days when dropping your phone could mean anywhere up to $200 in damages and a 3 week wait for repairs. Here’s hoping.
