Qualcomm, the manufacturer of the Snapdragon chipset, has some pretty exciting news for the mobile world. Either intentionally or unintentionally MobileTechWorld got their hands on some specs for the next gen of smartphone CPUs and the news is staggering.
In case you haven’t heard, and it’s likely that you haven’t, the Snapdragon processor, namely of the 1GHz variety, is one of the most common chips in the world when it comes to smartphones. It’s fast, reliable and small, making it perfect for portable device use.
Well, with so many dual-core 1GHz phones and web devices coming out it seems like Qualcomm decided it was time to up the ante.
The next gen of Snapdragon processors looks like it will be up to a staggering 2.5GHz per core. That’s already faster than the current dual-core smartphones we’re starting to see and Qualcomm apparently expects this chipset to boast quad-core compatibility. That’s essentially a 10GHz phone.
Now, before you lose your pants in excitement keep in mind that current battery and cooling technology is still a ways off allowing such a phone to exist, at least one that would comfortably fit in the pocket. But if we know technology (and we know technology) it should only be a sprinkling of short years away.
