We’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Windows Phone’s first big “Mango” update for some time now. We’ve expected it to finally see the light of day some time in either September or October and now we’re seeing a lot of rumors concerning a September 15th release date.

So far we don’t know how many phones are planned for this new OS update, nor can we say with any certainty how efficient the roll-out to existing Windows Phone 7 devices will be.

However, if this date of September 15th is true then we should be seeing not just the update but some brand new Windows Phone devices very soon.

If you haven’t heard much about the Mango update, or are wondering why it’s a big deal then we’ll quickly fill you in. Basically Windows Phone shot on to the scene last year with a bang, bringing with it a full 10 top-end devices from various manufacturers. It was originally ridiculed for lack of functionality and a few bugs that seemed prevalent across the device range. However, despite all of this it proved to be a smash hit with consumers, rocketing in to 3rd place behind Android and iOS in the US market in one short year.

Windows Phone Mango is the first major update that is set to bring Windows Phone in line with Android and iOS in terms of functionality and reliability. With such an already massive market share it’s going to be very interesting to see how consumers react to this upcoming release.

We’re definitely looking forward to seeing not just the new functionality of Windows Phone Mango, but also the new hardware that comes with it. How about you?
