The Xbox Music all-you-can-eat music subscription service is moving for the first time to platforms not owned by Microsoft.

Apps for the service today hit both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. It is free to download on both systems, though you will need to pay the subscription fee for the service -- US$9.99 per month or $99.99 upfront for 12-months.

Moving beyond its own ecosystems, Microsoft now enters a larger competition with other music services, namely Spotify, Sony's Music Unlimited and Google's All Access.

Xbox Music is advertised as having over 18-million tracks in its catalogue, one of the largest available.

Microsoft does maintain one major advantage in that its service can be accessed on the Xbox 360 and the upcoming Xbox One gaming consoles. These consoles are becoming central to the living rooms in many homes, and unlimited music streaming through home entertainment system speakers is a real bonus.
