Telus Mobility is Canada’s largest and most reliable carrier, covering 99% of Canadians. While it’s primarily known for its premium postpaid plans, Telus also offers several prepaid plans, including many through their cheaper flanker brands, providing users with several options for connecting to its vast network.

The best overall Telus prepaid plan is the Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 35 plan, which offers 1GB (plus an auto-pay bonus) of 5G data, unlimited nationwide talk, and unlimited international text for $35/month. Want more data? You can upgrade to the Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 45 plan and pick up 5GB of data for $45/month, plus additional data for enrolling in auto-pay. If you’re looking for the cheapest option, the Nationwide Talk & Text 25 plan offers 250MB of data and unlimited talk and text for just $25/month.

Read on to learn about the best Telus prepaid plans right now.

How we picked the best Telus prepaid plans

  • Price & value
We ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price, and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras & perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Best Telus
Prepaid Plan

5 out of 5 overall

Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 35 | $35/month

  • Pros: No contract, unlimited calling and messaging
  • Cons: Below average data allotment, overage fees

If you’re looking to avoid monthly contracts but still want reliable coverage, this Telus plan is the perfect fit. For $35/month, you’ll get unlimited nationwide talk, unlimited international text, and 6GB of data on Telus’ nationwide network (if you use the code AUTO2GB and enroll in Auto Renew or Auto Top-up at check out).

6GB is the average amount of data Canadians use, so this is a little blow the norm, though it's certainly enough for thrifty folks who save their streaming and gaming for Wi-Fi. If you do end up needing more data, Telus offers 5GB data add-ons for $35/month.

If you’re looking to pair a new phone with your new plan, Telus offers a number of basic smartphones that can be purchased outright with the activation of a prepaid plan. Telus also allows you to bring your own phone to their network, which can save you some money in the process.

4.5 out of 5 overall

Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 45 | $45/month

  • Pros: BYOD, no contract
  • Cons: More expensive, SIM card fee

Telus is also home to the Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 45 plan, which offers unlimited nationwide talk, unlimited international text, and 5GB of data for $45/month. Plus, if you enroll in auto-pay and use the promo code AUTO10GB during activation you'll pick up an additional 10GB.

Considering auto-pay is already a good move to make sure you don't miss a payment, we love that Telus is looking to reward you for something that already benefits you!

Save even more with Telus' Mobility for Good

In addition to their prepaid plans, Telus offers low-cost mobility plans for seniors, low-income youth, and government-assisted refugees. There are two plans offered through Mobility for Good: a $35/month 10GB plan and a $25/month 3GB plan

If you're interested in seeing if you qualify for these plans or want to learn more about the program, be sure to check out the Connecting for Good hub on the Telus site.

Prepaid Plan

4 out of 5 overall

Nationwide Talk & Text 25 | $25/month

  • Pros: Cheap Telus plan, bring your own phone
  • Cons: Minimal data

This is a bare-bones plan aimed at bare-bones users, offering unlimited talk and text with a 250MB data bonus (when you use 250AUTO at check out).

That amount likely won’t suffice for most Canadians, but it can be a good option for a backup phone, an emergency line for your kids, or a simple device for your elderly parents. After all, the price is hard to beat: you pay $25/month plus $10 for a SIM card.

Telus also allows you to pair a number of new smartphones with this plan, but if you’re looking for the most affordable option available, we recommend using an older device you’ve got around the house.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it to other plans from the same carrier as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best Telus prepaid plans. We considered plan-specific elements, including perks, premium data allowances, and mobile hotspot allocations. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, including customer feedback, we picked the Telus prepaid plans we feel meet the needs of most people.

Prepaid Telus phones

Telus allows you to pair new smartphones with your new prepaid plan, though all of them need to be purchased outright. The options for phones are limited, however: you won’t be able to grab the latest flagship iPhones and Androids, though Telus does offer more basic, practical smartphones.

We think the best option available is the ZTE Blade A3 Plus, an Android 11 Go device with a 5" display and a basic two-lens camera system.

Koodo Mobile prepaid plans

Koodo Mobile is owned by Telus and offers prepaid plans on the Telus network. Koodo’s plans are cheaper than comparable Telus plans, though there’s one important distinction: some of Koodo’s prepaid plans max out at 4G and 3G speeds, meaning you’ll have slower download speeds than you would with any of Telus’ prepaid plans.

Still, we think Koodo is a great fit for people who aren’t too concerned about streaming or gaming. We especially like their $25 Prepaid Base Plan, which offers unlimited nationwide talk, unlimited international text, and 24.5GB of data.
