Freedom Mobile has become the most disruptive carrier in Canada again. After the Rogers–Shaw merger and its network-sharing agreement with Videotron, Freedom upgraded its entire portfolio with affordable 5G and 5G+ plans. The company now offers mid-band 5G+ in major cities, expanded low-band 5G in suburban regions, and competitive pricing that undercuts nearly every national and flanker carrier in Canada.

We analyzed Freedom’s 5G+ performance, tested speeds in multiple cities, and evaluated its newest Total Freedom plans. Below is everything you need to know before switching.

Freedom Mobile 5G speeds

Freedom Mobile primarily offers 5G+ plans to Canadians. 5G is the fastest wireless service available in Canada, though not all 5G service is the same. Freedom Mobile's 5G network offers up to 900Mbps speeds. In real-world hands-on testing, I've found speeds average around 250Mbps in Toronto and other supported metro cities.

Freedom’s speeds and networking vary by location, as 5G+ doesn’t cover the entirety of Canada. In areas where 5G+ isn't available, Freedom Mobile still supports 4G LTE. Its performance is strong enough for high-quality streaming and web browsing.

5G vs. 5G+ bands and frequencies

Freedom Mobile’s network offers two types of next-generation wireless service: 5G+ and 5G. Many carriers readily support 5G services, primarily in larger urban cities across Canada. As 5G has become the network standard in Canada, many carriers have begun adopting 5G+ services.

The differences between 5G and 5G+ ultimately come down to speed. 5G primarily runs on low-band, with 5G+ operating on the mid-band spectrum:

  • 5G = low-band n71 / 600MHz

  • 5G+ = mid-band spectrum, similar to n41 / mid-band allocations from the Rogers–Videotron agreement

Network speed real-world testing

Network Download speeds Upload speeds Best for
5G+ (mid-band) 350–800Mbps 20–60Mbps Streaming, gaming, hotspotting, fast downloads
5G (low-band) 50–225Mbps 5–25Mbps Every day browsing, social media, maps, video calls

Freedom Mobile is one of the few flanker brands to support 5G+ plans. As a result, Freedom Mobile offers some of the fastest services outside of Bell, Rogers, and Telus. Freedom Mobile's 900Mbps ceiling is well above the average for MVNOs, which typically range from 150Mbps to 200Mbps.

Freedom 5G coverage area

Freedom’s 5G service reaches 31% of Canadians, a number that pales in comparison to 5G from the Big Three, whose networks reach over 70% of Canadians. The difference is due to concentration. While Bell, Rogers, and Telus offer pockets of 5G throughout most of the provinces, Freedom’s 5G network is limited to the densely populated urban areas of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec.

Western Canada

Freedom’s strongest BC coverage remains in the Lower Mainland:

  • Vancouver
  • Burnaby
  • Richmond
  • Surrey
  • Coquitlam
  • Langley
  • Maple Ridge

5G+ performance peaks near downtown Vancouver, where mid-band spectrum enables speeds over 500Mbps.

Towards Alberta, Freedom offers strong 5G+ pockets in:

  • Calgary (Beltline, Downtown, Kensington)
  • Edmonton (Downtown, Whyte Ave, North Edmonton)

Outside these zones, low-band 5G covers most major suburban routes.

Eastern Canada

Freedom Mobile’s 5G coverage in Ontario is less concentrated, with several pockets spread throughout the southern stretch of the province. As you might expect, 5G is available in the greater metropolitan areas of Toronto and London, though smaller cities like Windsor and Barrie also receive Freedom’s fastest service.

Similarly, Freedom 5G is spread across Quebec, thanks in no small part to the carrier’s partnership with Videotron. Much of it is concentrated around the urban centres of Ottawa, Longueuil, and Quebec City, though coverage for Quebecers extends as far west as Rouyn-Noranda, as far north as Alma, and as far east as Rimouski.

Freedom Mobile 5G plans

Freedom Mobile offers a handful of 5G+ phone plans for different types of customers. All of Freedom Mobile's plans come with Canada-wide talk and text perks, ensuring stable, reliable communication. The core differences between Freedom Mobile's plans are their data pools.

Here are a few that Freedom Mobile readily supports.

Best value

The 60GB Total Freedom plan is a great choice if you want more data than the basic tier but don't want to pay as much as the higher-priced 100GB option. It’s well-suited for routinely streaming video across platforms like Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video. If you frequently scroll social media and TikTok, 60GB of data will be enough to satiate those downtime moments.

Best unlimited

The 100GB Total Freedom plan is our top pick for an unlimited plan because it delivers a large amount of premium 5G data at a competitive price point. You also get talk and text across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, plus Freedom’s Roam Beyond data allowance, which you can use in 120+ countries without daily roaming fees—a rare perk with an MVNO. Freedom Mobile 5G: The verdict

Recently, I went hands-on with Freedom Mobile's 150 Total Freedom plan, testing its 5G+ capabilities in Toronto and southern Ontario. The results were quite positive all around. I was able to FaceTime and conduct Zoom calls on the network while at Pearson airport. The signal was consistently strong in Toronto, even in dense areas, so that I could call and text without issue.

There’s no shortage of carriers offering 5G in Canada. Right now, you can enable 5G service from Bell, Rogers, Telus, Public, SaskTel, Koodo, Virgin Plus, Eastlink, Videotron, and, of course, Freedom. Compared with the competition, Freedom’s 5G plans can’t match the high speeds offered by Bell, Rogers, and Telus. At times, its low-band service will not look much different from other carriers’ 4G LTE service.

With that in mind, we recommend Bell, Rogers, or Telus if you’re looking for reliable high-speed 5G or 5G+ service. If you’re comparing Freedom 5G with a 4G flanker, we strongly recommend Freedom because their plans can reach speeds of around 250Mbps, which is considerably higher than 4G alternatives can offer.
