The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the brightest and most powerful iPhone yet, costing $1,549 and up. At first glance, there's not a lot to talk about with the iPhone 14 hardware this year. There are still two 12MP rear cameras, 5G service, MagSafe accessories, and a 6.1-inch display. These features are all powered by an A15 Bionic CPU, but it uses the more capable 5-core GPU model found in last year's iPhone 13 Pro family. Where the base model iPhone stands out this year is new features like Photonic Engine and Action Mode image processing. Not to mention, an iPhone 14 keeps you safe when things go wrong, thanks to the new Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite.

iPhone 14 vs. iPhone 14 Plus

The biggest differences between the cheapest iPhone 14 and the new oversized iPhone 14 Plus are the battery life, display size, and physical dimensions. The larger iPhone 14 Plus boasts a longer battery life with 26 hours of video playback compared to the base model's 20 hours. Both models use the same Super Retina XDR display technology with 1200 nits peak HDR brightness. However, they each maintain approximately 460 pixels per inch (ppi), making pixels invisible to the eye at arm's length. As a result, the resolution on the iPhone 14 Plus is a little higher than the smaller iPhone 14. The iPhone 14 is slightly thinner than last year's iPhone 13 but weighs about the same. On the other hand, the larger iPhone 14 Plus nearly matches the iPhone 14 Pro Max in dimensions, but is about 15% lighter—likely because it only has two rear-facing cameras instead of three.

There's a lot of new hardware inside, but let's start with the most visible change—the notch is gone (finally!). In its place is the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped black bar that hides the front-facing camera and sensors. Additionally, it creatively presents notifications and enables you to interact easily with background apps. The display features up to 1600 nits HDR brightness and 2000 nits for outdoor use. This brightness level is far beyond the ability of any other smartphone running iOS or Android. When the iPhone 14 Pro is inactive, it offers a new Always-On display that sips power while presenting a full screen of notifications. Inside the new iPhone Pro model is a new A16 Bionic CPU. You’ll also find the new 48MP camera sensor delivers brilliant 12MP pictures even in low light, 48MP ProRaw photos for professionals, and an additional 2x zoom option.

There are no significant differences between the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The bigger 6.7-inch display, longer-lasting battery, and larger dimensions are the same variations we saw between the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max last year. No matter which model you choose, we recommend filmmakers looking at the iPhone 14 Pro get at least 256GB of onboard storage—the smaller 128GB option doesn't support 4K ProRes video recording.
