Apple loves talking about its App store. Whenever a download milestone is reached, another 50 000 apps become available or when there’s a chance to compare iOS game purchases to other gaming platforms Apple doesn’t hesitate to take the initiative. So with Apple’s recent announcement that it’s finally hit the 15 billion app downloads marker we imagine Steve Jobs doing nothing short of giggling with glee to himself in a corner somewhere. For anyone it hasn’t clicked for yet 15 billion is roughly 2.2x the number of people currently alive on Earth (source: Google PublicData).
This puts Apple’s app store download rate at an astonishing average 5 billion apps per-annum since its inception 3 years ago. Considering that the iconic company just announced in January that it had hit the 10 billion download mark it’s possible the figure could go as high as 20 billion by the year’s end.
A continued acceleration in app downloads is fully expected as the new tablet market continues to grow. With so many developers designing apps for both iPhones and iPads these days the total number of available apps from the App store has risen to around 425 000 apps for iOS devices.
With profits like this it’s no wonder Apple isn’t sweating the late release of the next gen of iPhones. Who needs to worry hardware when you have the largest software distribution system in the world? Not Apple, that’s for sure.
