How we picked the best Telus plans

  • Price & value
We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing on the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras and perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Essential 75 5G | $65/month

  • Pros: 5G access, solid data allotment, BYOD
  • Cons: Not eligible for family discount

This is the best overall Telus cell phone plan, offering unlimited talk and text plus 75GB of 5G data on the nationwide Telus network, which is one of the largest in the country. Considering the average Canadian only uses 6GB of data per month, 75GB is more than enough to satisfy most Canadians, even if their cell phone usage is far beyond average.

If you're looking to pair a phone with this plan, Telus offers financing for many of the latest smartphones, including the brand-new Samsung Galaxy S24, but the best savings come for those who bring their own device (BYOD).

Best Telus
Unlimited Plan

Unlimited 100 5G+ Can-US | $80/month

  • Pros: Unlimited 5G data, unlimited talk and text in CA and US
  • Cons: Limited-time pricing

Telus has solid unlimited data plans, but this is the best of the bunch. The Unlimited 100 5G+ Can-US offers 100GB of full-speed 5G data. If you exceed that monthly allotment, you'll still receive service, though it'll be slowed. But exceeding 100GB in a single month is not an easy task: we imagine that you'll always have access to that lightning-fast 5G speed. The plan also offers unlimited talk and text in both Canada and the United States. That makes it an ideal plan for snowbirds who regularly travel south.

If you have an older device at home, or still like the phone from your previous plan, we recommend BYOD, which allows you to save money by avoiding a monthly phone payment.

Phone Plan for Seniors

Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 35 | $35/month

  • Pros: Unlimited talk and text, no contract, bonus data for new activations
  • Cons: Average data allotment, no 5G

If you're looking for an ideal senior cell phone plan, a prepaid plan is your best bet. Telus' prepaid plans offer basic connectivity without signing up for confusing annual contracts. This option is our top pick for seniors: the Nationwide Talk, Text & Data 35 plan offers unlimited talk and text, ensuring that you'll be able to keep in touch with family near and far. In addition, the plan offers 1GB of data on the nationwide Telus network, allowing you to browse the internet and use basic apps, like Google Maps or your internet browser, on the go.

For a limited time, the deal is even sweeter: you can grab an additional 2GB of data when you use the promo code AUTO2GB at checkout.

Mobility for Good

If there’s one service that sets Telus apart from the competition, it’s the non-profit Mobility for Good initiative. Originally launched in British Columbia to help young adults transitioning out of foster care, Telus expanded the program during the COVID-19 pandemic to include low-income seniors and Indigenous women at risk.

Products and services provided by Mobility for Good include:

  • Free refurbished smartphones and plans for youth and Indigenous women
  • Subsidized plans and devices for seniors
  • TELUS Wise resources promoting digital literacy and safety workshops

Canadians can donate previously used phones and tablets in good condition to the program at any Telus store. Other Telus Connected for Good programs include low-cost internet, technology solutions for Canadians with disabilities, and medical services for vulnerable members of our communities.

Telus family sharing plans and discounts

Telus offers family-sharing discounts when you bundle two or more cell phone plans on one account. Each additional line on your wireless bill reduces the cost for all your mobile plans; with at least four phone plans, you can save $15 per line each month.

Another great benefit to Telus family plans is data cap sharing. Each plan's full-speed data limits combine to make one large data pot. Combine three 25GB plans on your account for other family members, and everyone can share a total of 75GB before speed throttling kicks in. The account holder can even limit how much full-speed data each line gets, so give the kids 10GB and save the rest for yourself!

If you're jealous you don't have a house full of kids to take advantage of these family plan discounts...we've got a secret for you: there’s no rule saying everyone has to live in the same home to share a Telus account. Add your kids, parents, relatives in another province, or just your best friend. We won’t tell on you.

The best Telus family-sharing plan depends on how much data your particular family needs. But we think the best option for most families is the Unlimited Family Plan with four lines, which gives you 400GB of shareable 5G data for $260/month.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best Telus plans. We analyzed their coverage, cost, and plan options and considered plan-specific elements, including perks and premium data allowances. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, including customer feedback, we picked the family plans we feel meet the needs of most people.
