Rumors regarding the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note III are starting to boil down, appearing to agree on certain points that have until recently been contentious. Of course it’s still all mostly hearsay, except for the details that Samsung has already released on its site.

Samsung’s confirmed Note III specs

On Samsung’s site, if you go through the WAP provisioning files for the Note III, you’ll discover some pretty specific information. For one, the Note III will come in two model numbers – the SM-N900T and SM-N900A. These two models are possibly aimed at different markets, rather than being two different ‘premium’ and ‘secondary’ handsets.

Other confirmed specs are a full 1080p display panel of undetermined size and an ARM11 processor. The processor doesn’t tell us too much; many manufacturers make chips based on ARM11 architecture of varying power and speeds.

Increasingly plausible rumors

The biggest point of contest so far has been the size of the Note III’s screen. Specifically, will it be 5.7 inches, 6 inches, or something in between? Reports are starting to focus a little more on the 5.7 inch side of things, but nothing concrete has come up as yet.

Personally we’d prefer to see a 5.7, rather than a 6. A six-inch panel would put the note in direct competition with the Samsung Galaxy Mega series, in terms of size if not quality. 5.7 inches also feels like the Note III would be holding more true to its predecessors, which have been 5.3 and 5.5 inches respectively. The smaller option would also lend the Note III more pixels per inch (ppi) which would improve image crispness.

Also expected is a full 3GB of RAM. This wouldn’t be hugely surprising, but we’re not sold on the prospect. 2GB is still very powerful for a smartphone and Samsung may not feel it necessary to push the bar up by a further 50% so soon after the 2GB GS4 and HTC One hit the market.

As for the processor, the Dutch site Sim Only Radar seems to think that we’ll be looking at two options: either an Exynos 5 Octa or a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800. This is where those two different model numbers come in. If one were aimed at 3G-only markets and the other for the 4G world then it would be standard practice to beef up the CPU of the 3G version.

Should either of these processors turn out to be true, the Note III will be a powerhouse of a handset.
