It appears the new tri-monthly rapid update model recently adopted by Firefox is already kicking itself in to gear. Just one month after Firefox 5 was released for download Firefox 6 is already available in the form of a usable beta.
Firefox 6 seems to be mainly improvements for handsets and tablets so far, something we consider a definite positive for the popular browser. Traditionally Firefox versions have taken a bit long to start up on Android devices and have been somewhat sluggish overall. Firefox 6 is aiming to fix much of that in order to expand its presence in the mobile market.
So far the Firefox 6 updates include:
- Faster startup time
- Improved image scaling to reduce pixilation
- A new visual style on Gingerbread or higher
- Improved performance on large screened tablets
- Better rendering for pages that use a right-to-left textual style such as those in Arabic or Hebrew.
- Automatic text hyphenation
Like we said when Firefox 5 was released none of the future updates are likely to be too ground-breaking. With so many updates each year it’s difficult to get excited about minor changes here and there but we can assure you it does all add up.
These new features for mobile browsing should definitely boost Firefox’s online presence in the mobile market and with 2 more months until the release deadline is up we’re hoping to see some more new features make their way in before the full version is ready for download.
