Here Are The Changes to Freedom Mobile's Nationwide Plans

After refreshing their entire plan lineup, Freedom Mobile might be worth a new look. Beyond some name changes, their plans offer greater access across the country as well as more data for use at home.

Although they run Canada's fourth-largest LTE mobile network, Freedom Mobile features limited access outside major cities and can only be found in three provinces (Ontario, BC and Alberta). Even so, they offer some of the largest data plans at low prices that Canadians are craving. It's no wonder they have over 1.4 million subscribers.

In addition to last week's re-introduction of low-cost prepaid plans starting at $9/month, Freedom has renamed their network system and added in a few new features that new and existing customers will get to enjoy going forward.

For years they've featured "Home" and "Away" zones to manage the difference between limited and unlimited access.

Home Zones—now called "Freedom Network"—offers full LTE speeds, lots of data, and usually unlimited nationwide talk, and global text, picture and video messaging.
Away Zones—now called "Freedom Nationwide Canada Network"—offers restricted or pay-per-use data, talk and text depending on the plan.

Changes to All Freedom Mobile Plans

Changes to Big Gig + Talk Plans

Big Gig + Talk plans are among the most popular at Freedom Mobile so small changes here will be felt throughout their customer base.

While on the Freedom Nationwide Canada Network (previously called "Away Network"), you can now send picture and video messages by MMS to anywhere in the world. Previously, customers could only send text messages on Away network.

One more change to note is that World Saver is no longer included for free. It can still be found as a $5/month add-on. World Saver helps you get reduced long-distance rates as low as $0.01/minute to more than 200 countries.

Changes to Big Gig Plans

Big Gig plans are great for those of us who don't use our phones to talk very much. Savings are typically about $10/month over comparable Big Gig + Talk plans, and talk time is only $0.05/minute. That's far cheaper than most plans anywhere in Canada.

World Saver add-on for cheaper international calling is no longer available to Big Gig plans that don't include talk.

Calling features and prices haven't changed. Calls are still a cheap $0.05/minute whether you're on the Freedom Network or the Freedom Nationwide Canada network, but incoming calls while at home on the Freedom Network are free. Previously, MMS messaging was an extra cost while roaming on the Away network, but now all Global text, picture and video messages are free no matter where you are in Canada.

Freedom has moved their 1GB Data-Only Plan for $25 to Freedom Plans, but it still enjoys the changes that Big Gig plans get including unlimited incoming calls on the Freedom Network, and unlimited Global text, picture and video messaging anywhere in Canada.

Even so, if you're on this plan you should look at their new refreshed Freedom Mobile Prepaid Plans that WhistleOut Canada covered previously. Unless you plan to use MyTab to get a new device, go for the prepaid option instead.

Changes to Home Freedom Network Plans

Besides renaming the plans to reflect the new networks, the Freedom Network Plans still feature the same plans. Data is applicable for your local Freedom Network but data while roaming costs extra. Previously data was $0.05/MB, but now appears to only be available as a 1GB Freedom Nationwide Add-on for the 500MB and 2GB Freedom Plans.

The Freedom 250MB plan previously included unlimited incoming calls anywhere in Canada, but now it appears free incoming calls only applies to the Freedom Nationwide Canada Network. 100 minutes of outgoing calls or calls of any sort on the Freedom Network are included. Unlimited text, picture and video messages are now free to Canada and the US both on the Freedom Nationwide Canada Network.

Both the 500MB and 2GB Freedom Plans now feature unlimited Canada-wide talk everywhere in Canada. Unlimited global text, picture and video messaging is also included everywhere. The only thing you'll miss out on while on the Freedom Nationwide Canada Network is access to data.

Freedom's discount LTE+3G 9.5GB Promo doesn't change much except that World Saver is no longer included for discounted international long-distance rates.

Changes to Freedom Tablet Plans

Freedom's currently running a promotion that gives customers 4GB of Freedom Network data for $15/month and a free Samsung Galaxy Tab A for $0/month when you sign up for two years. Plan details haven't changed with the new network names, but Freedom is now advertising that this and all other plans have access to more than 300,000 Freedom Wi-Fi Hotspots in Canada which is up from 100,000 hotspots previously.
