A new rumor has crept up on the web and it’s that Apple’s upcoming iOS5 update will not be made available to iPhone 3GS users. The comment originated from renowned tech-news insider Eldar Murtazin’s Twitter account.
“Just one comment. Apple iPhone 3GS won’t be upgradable to iOS5.x. iPhone 4 will.”
While it might sound silly at first, there could be some reason to this move should Apple actually be taking it. Most obviously is that as hardware advances it opens up new possibilities for software and the operating systems on which it runs.
Unfortunately this phenomenon means that those of us with older devices get left behind once our gadgets no longer have the hardware required to run the newest platforms. Think of it as trying to get a MicroBee computer to run Windows 7 or Mac OS X. It’s a bit of an extreme comparison but you get the picture.
When iOS 4 was first released it was made available to iPhone 3G, 3Gs and iPhone 4 users. However, many iPhone 3G users found that their devices actually saw a significant drop in performance with the new operating system. Their hardware simply wasn’t designed to keep up with the demands being placed on it by the new iOS4 OS.
Right now it’s just a rumor, so we can add it to the iPhone rumor pile. Apple, of course, is yet to comment, but you can be relatively sure that when they do it’ll be cryptic and ultimately reveal nothing of their true intentions. That’s just Apple’s style.
