It appears that even that the recent success of the Nokia Windows Phone debut with the Lumia 800 and 710 handsets just isn’t enough for the Finnish giant. Nokia has acquired a new operating system (OS) by the name of Smarterphone, despite seeing reasonable success with the MeeGo OS with the Nokia N9 just a short while ago.
Possibly the most interesting tid-bit of info is that the acquisition happened in November last year. Why all the secrecy then? We’re not really sure.
Smarterphone, as an OS, is designed to run on feature-phones, rather than smartphones. The idea is to create a smartphone-esque experience on handsets that rest at the far more affordable end of the market.
It’s a solid idea, of course, and Nokia is still seeing Symbian support in many of its more farflung markets. In many ways the move makes sense, considering that Symbian is going the way of the dodo. Nokia is going to need a new OS to take over its still immense feature-phone empire.
It’s unclear just yet as to just where these Smartphone feature-phones (try saying that 10 times quickly) are going to see the light of day, not to mention when or if. But we’ll try to keep our eyes and ears open in the coming weeks for more info. It’s not exactly smartphone news, but we still find it intriguing, nonetheless.
