Nokia has released a beta update for their Ovi Maps navigator. For certain cities around the world users are now given the option to make their way through a 3D representation.
It’s pretty different from Google’s street view approach, whereby Google sends vehicles loaded with cameras down every road in the world and offer a pieced-together photo of epic proportions.
Rather, Ovi Maps seems to have made their version from some clever software and overhead photos. As such it’s still pretty rough and many of the buildings can come out at odd shapes. However, it does offer passable if rough 3D view of New York from high altitude as soon as you zoom in close enough.
If you want to download the browser plug-in you can get it here.
Currently the extension works with Firefox, Chrome, Internet explorer and Safari.
