Samsung could be following in the footsteps of Kyocera and Sony in the field of dual-screen devices. We took an in-depth look in to the pros and cons of a dual screen device in a Kyocera Echo post a while back, and we’ve been fans of the Sony S2 tablet on paper since we first heard about it.
Now it seems that Samsung could be planning their own dual-screen handsets and it’s got us thinking.
The Kyocera Echo was certainly a bold move and made tech industry headlines more than once after its debut, but since then it hasn’t exactly seen an unprecedented number of sales in the smartphone market. The Sony S2, while sporting 2 screens, is a tablet and thus will have a different focus of use for its owners. It’s also still unclear just how well the Sony S2 will end up being received by its potential customers, as internet hype over it tends to be very two sided.
With such a questionable likelihood for mass acceptance it’s surprising to hear that Samsung is considering this move.
While’s we’re definitely fans of the whole dual-screen concept (you really should check out our Kyocera Echo post to see why), we’re concerned that the technology just isn’t quite there yet.
One of the major issues facing dual-screen handsets is battery power. One screen is bad enough. If you saw our HTC Desire HD review a while back you’d see the negative effects even a single 4.3 inch display can have on long-term usability.
There’s also the issue of thickness. Both the Kyocera Echo and Sony S2 tablet at their thickest points are noticeably more chunky than traditional slate, or even QWERTY slider phones.
However, we are aware that Samsung has not only a reputation for providing some of the most amazing and clear displays in not only the mobile industry, but the TV industry as well, it has also proven time and again that it is capable of churning out some of the thinnest devices on the market.
No matter what we’re definitely keen to see what Samsung has on offer, if this information turns out to be accurate. Until then we’d like to know what you think. Are you intrigued by the idea of a 2 display Samsung handset? Or do you not really see the point in dual-screens?
