Google is reportedly working on a Google-branded home entertainment system whereby music content can be streamed wirelessly throughout a user’s house, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The idea of an Android-powered home entertainment system is certainly not surprising, as Google now has its own Music streaming cloud infrastructure in the US and selected areas. However, what is surprising is that the actual device itself is said to be Google branded.
It’s true that there have been Google brandings on hardware gadgets before, such as the Google Nexus One. But this time it’s a bit different. Google apparently isn’t outsourcing the R&D and manufacturing side out to a completely independent manufacturer. This time we’re hearing that it will be Google’s brand sitting on top, with no one else’s name to share the credit.
Traditionally Google has been a software company, relying on others to develop hardware capable of or depending on running its products, so it will be interesting to see how this venture goes.
At this point all we’ve really heard about it is that it will be a music-based home entertainment service. However, knowing Google it’s highly possible that other forms of media will be supported as well. It’s all in the early stages at the moment, so we’re not expecting any big announcements from Google in the next couple of months. But we’ll keep our eyes and ears open, nonetheless.
