Toshiba has entered the fight for pixilation supremacy with a bang, showing off a range of LCD screens for smartphones with a whopping density of 367 pixels per inch (ppi). In other terms that’s a resolution of 720 x 1280 crammed on to a 4 inch screen.
Another way to view this is to compare it to Apple’s industry leading “Retina Display” on the iPhone 4 that boasts an impressive 640 x 960 pixels across a 3.5 inch display. That’s a ppi ratio of 326.
Apple has always boasted that the Retina Display was so named because at normal viewing distance the pixels were indistinguishable from one another by the human eye. While this is a somewhat grandiose claim one must admit that the clarity of the iPhone 4’s screen is certainly appreciably crisp. Whether or not this claim is actually true is up to the user, but it seems that Toshiba has gone ahead anyway and one-upped the world’s most iconic phone manufacturer at its own game.
Toshiba hasn’t just focused on pixelation either. Their new screens boast an attention-worthy contrast ratio of 1 500:1, a ration not often seen in the handset market.
There’s still going to be some time until we see any of these screens implemented, however. So for the time being Apple gets to keep their title of highest ppi device on the market.
