Koodo is a budget-minded cell phone provider owned by Telus Communications. The best plan that Koodo offers is 40GB of 4G data for $50/month and allows you to bring your own phone or finance a new iPhone or Android.

We're also fans of the limited-time No Tab/BYO with 60GB, which we think is a great option for those customers who use more mobile data per month but are tired of unreasonably high bills. We're equally impressed with Koodo's basic options, especially its $35/month plan, which gives users 3GB of 3G data per month.

How we picked the best Koodo plans

  • Price & value
We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price, and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras and perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Best Overall
Koodo Cell Phone Plan

Strong cell phone plan choices come down to features and value. You get plenty of both from our favourite Koodo plan.

Koodo
5 out of 5 overall

Tab Basic with 40GB | $50/month

  • Pros: Good value, BYOD
  • Cons: Only available in QC, no 5G

Koodo's best overall plan includes 40GB of 4G data, unlimited Canada-wide calling, and international texting. You can easily connect to friends and loved ones around the world. Most Canadian customers don't use more than 6GB of data, so 40GB is more than enough to get you through the month. Still, you'll want to track your data usage to ensure you don't run out early.

The best part of this plan is that it's BYOD. Bringing your own device allows you to save big by using the trusty phone you already own. If you do need a new device, we recommend buying an unlocked phone and activating it on Koodo.

If you're a gamer, a streamer, or someone working from home, you know you'll need more data and Koodo's got you covered.

No Tab/BYO with 60GB Data | $50/month

  • Pros: Lots of data, unlimited Canada-wide calling
  • Cons: Limited-time offer

Customers who pick up this plan will love the freedom to scroll TikTok or catch up on YouTube while you're on the go. You also get the same unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting. While 60GB is a lot of data (more than we imagine most users could burn through, even if they tried!), but this Koodo plan isn't unlimited, so be sure to check your usage periodically.

No Tab/BYO with 3GB Data | $35/month

  • Pros: Cheap, great for seniors and kids
  • Cons: 3G data speeds might be frustrating

Whether you're looking for a phone plan for a senior, a child, or someone who doesn't need much data, Koodo's 3GB plan is a great pick-up. The data speeds are limited to 3G, but you still get to enjoy the unlimited Canada-wide calling and international texting included with the more expensive plans. With your 3GB of data, simple tasks like checking your email or the occasional photo share won’t be a problem, but you'll want to stay away from streaming too much video content.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it to other plans from the same carrier, as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best Koodo cell phone plans. We analyzed their coverage, cost, and plan options and considered plan-specific elements, including perks, premium data allowances, and mobile hotspot allocations. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, including customer feedback, we picked the Koodo plans we feel meet the needs of most people.
