In this guide, I’ll analyze Koodo's coverage map across Canada, breaking down where you can find the best coverage and where you’ll encounter the carrier’s dreaded dead zones. We’ll also compare the coverage to its direct competitors, including Public Mobile, Virgin Plus, and Fido, so you’ll understand your options before activating a new plan.

Koodo’s plans operate on its parent company's network (Telus), reaching over 99% of Canadians and covering 37% of the country. Coverage is especially strong in the urban areas of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec. In these areas, Koodo customers experience 5G service with faster data speeds and reliable call quality.

Koodo also has access to Telus’ 5G network, which currently reaches 70% of Canadians and continues to expand every year. Koodo is one of the rare flanker brands that supports 5G services. Most MVNO brands provide cheaper phone plans, sacrificing 5G access for 4G LTE. Koodo supports a small handful of 5G plans to choose from, each with varying data sizes.
Public Mobile, which bills itself as “Canada’s first 5G subscription service,” is also a Telus-owned carrier. We assume Telus isn’t interested in pitting two of its flankers against each other and, instead, has positioned Public as the affordable 5G option and Koodo as the mid-tier boujee cousin.
Compare Koodo Mobile coverage: Public Mobile, Virgin Plus, and Fido

Public Mobile vs. Koodo Mobile coverage map

Image: Public Mobile
Public Mobile also operates on the nationwide Telus network, alongside Koodo. So, Public Mobile's coverage map is identical to Koodo’s. Both carriers offer 5G services to Canadians. While coverage is identical, the plans that both service providers offer are different. Public Mobile supports different data buckets to choose from. The supplemental plan perks are also less tantalizing than Koodo's, justifying the latter's higher prices.
Public Mobile bills itself as Canada’s first “5G subscription phone service.” It offers cheap plans on the Telus 5G network, the same coverage Koodo offers. The plans are so good that they often top our guide of the best cell phone plans in Canada.
Image: Public Mobile
Public’s 5G coverage is available in every province. Major hotspots include British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec. Unfortunately for those in the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, 5G isn't widely supported by Public Mobile. Overall, the country’s major metropolitan areas receive reliable 5G service, though Public’s high-speed service will likely expand as Telus continues to expand its network.
If you’re interested in exploring some of Public’s best options, you can find the carrier’s most popular plans below, including a few cheap 5G plans.
Virgin Plus vs. Koodo Mobile coverage map

Image: Virgin Plus
Virgin Plus operates on the nationwide Bell network, which provides 4G LTE coverage to over 99% of Canadians. The carrier's 4G LTE services are found all throughout the country from British Columbia out through Newfoundland. Virgin Plus claims its 4G LTE service supports up to 150Mbps speeds.
In 2024, Virgin Plus pulled the plug on all of its 5G services. When active, Virgin Plus' 5G reached over 70% of Canadians with competitively priced plans. Unfortunately for Canadians, Bell decided against supporting 5G on its Virgin Plus brand.

Fido vs. Koodo Mobile coverage map

Image: Fido
Fido operates on Rogers' nationwide 4G LTE network, which reaches over 97% of Canadians and covers 28% of the landmass. That’s a much smaller reach than Koodo, though the Rogers network has been rated the most reliable in the country. If it covers your neighbourhood, it’s the best option.
The flanker offers several affordable plans for budget-conscious consumers looking for reliable coverage, though it doesn’t offer any 5G options. Unlike Koodo, Fido has never offered 5G, and the company hasn't shown any indication of wanting to offer 5G services. Rogers has traditionally kept its brands distinctively different. Rogers offers premium 5G options, Chatr offers the most prepaid options, and Fido offers solid—albeit outdated—4G LTE packages.

What is Koodo's Extended Coverage area?
Koodo offers Extended Network Coverage in Canada. While supporting an extensive network from coast to coast, there are still dead zones where its 5G and 4G LTE network doesn't reach. If customers reach certain spots where there is no Koodo network coverage, service is connected to a partner's network.
Using Koodo's Extended Network Coverage is free and automatic. You'll know if you're on the Extended Network when your device displays "EXT". When in an area with Extended Network coverage, Koodo customers can continue to use data, send texts, and use voice services without additional charges.
It's worth noting that Koodo's Extended Network Coverage operates on the LTE network for data and 3G for voice communication.
