Well it’s finally happened folks. In around just 3 short years Apple has done what might have seemed impossible back in 2007 and taken Nokia’s golden crown, officially seizing market supremacy here in Australia with the iPhone. That’s not just for smartphones, by the way. Apple is now Australia’s number 1 mobile phone vendor.
“The iPhone-maker [Apple] now accounts for 36.5 per cent of the smartphone market, eclipsing Nokia's 30.5 per cent share, according to analyst firm IDC's Q3 Mobile Device Tracker…” via http://www.smh.com.au
An article in the Sydney Morning Herald reports on some recently released statistics that show Apple to have a clear lead on the once mighty Nokia. However, the Finnish phone company might be in for another shock, as analysts predict Google Android to join Apple in the top two spots some time next year.
Frankly, this is indicative of Nokia’s inability to keep up in the smartphone race. Among other factors, Nokia’s habit of clinging to continuity instead of instituting platform-wide reforms in its Symbian operating system has been hitting them hard in the smartphone market for some time now. Nokia needs to stop playing catch-up and start making some innovative changes in their approach to design and functionality.
The announcement of Apple’s win should come as no surprise, as the iPhone has been the most desired phone in Australia, the UK and the US for some years now. What will be interesting to watch is whether Android has what it takes to take spot number 2 on the ladder and really start duking it out with Apple next year.
All this being said, Nokia is still the world leader in the mobile phone market by a wide margin. Does Apple have what it takes to go all the way, or will Nokia take a step back and rethink a few of their practices before it’s too late? We honestly do hope for the latter. While we may not be the biggest fans of the Symbian operating system (OS) it does have a lot of potential.
Come on Nokia. You already have some great hardware, now what we need is a better OS and a streamlined user interface. Pick yourself up and get back in there. There’s nothing we love to see more than fierce competition in the mobile market and you’ve got a lot of fight left in you yet.
