RIM’s much awaited BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has finally hit stores in the US and Canada. The pricing is similar to what we’ve seen in the rest of the tablet market with the 16GB version starting at $500, the 32GB coming in at $599 and the 64GB option finishing it off at $699.
At the moment the PlayBook is only available as a Wi-Fi device, not offering 3G or 4G support, but a 3G model should be poking its head out soon.
The BlackBerry PlayBook has some great integration features for anyone already using a BlackBerry device as their handset. However, even if you don’t have a BlackBerry device the PlayBook is still a good looking tablet.
As far as hardware goes the PlayBook is very similar to most of the competition. A dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 7 inch display with 600 x 1024 resolution, 5MP rear camera and 3MP front-facing camera.
With these kind of specs it really comes down to the operating system (OS) and user interface (UI) experience when deciding which tablet is best for you.
The BlackBerry PlayBook certainly hasn’t received the same hype as other tablets like the iPad 2, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab range or the Motorola Xoom, but it’s still definitely a good idea to check it out if you’re in the market for a tablet and haven’t yet made up your mind.
