Article Summary

  • Petro-Canada mobile services work with a variety of phones
  • You can bring your own phone or buy one outright, but selection is limited
  • Plans include pay-as-you-go options as well as affordable 30-day prepaid plans

Petro-Canada Mobile offers some of the most affordable prepaid pay-as-you-go minutes in Canada. The Anytime Plan is a great option for occasional use or to keep handy for emergencies. If you want to customize your plan, you can build a monthly deal with unlimited nationwide talk time and gigabytes data without a credit check. Unlike most carriers, you can save a few more dollars each month by choosing upfront how many minutes of talk time you buy.

Now here's the bad news. You may want to bring your own phone. Petro-Canada Mobile offers one or more low-end smartphones for sale. There are no midrange or premium smartphones to buy on a two-year plan. However, any phone that is compatible with the Rogers cell network should work since that's the backbone used by Petro-Canada Mobility. Switching from another mobile provider may require you to unlock your phone, so we have a quick guide to help you prep your phone when moving to a new carrier

Smartphones on Petro-Canada Mobile

A new device from Petro-Canada Mobile can cost up to $200, but you really get your money's worth. Just a few years ago, only premium smartphones had features like long-lasting battery, high-resolution camera, 6" HD display and a current version of Android. The Nokia smartphones for sale at Petro-Canada Mobile will change your perception of what can be bought with just one paycheck.

Whether you buy one from Petro-Canada Mobile or bring your own, be aware that not all the cell phones offered are winners. Avoid 3G-only devices (like the Nokia 3310 3G) because it doesn't support the more reliable 4G LTE. There are no official plans by Rogers to shut down 3G service this year, but you don't want to spend money on a new phone just to see it made quickly obsolete.

Pick the Best Plan for You

Petro-Canada Mobile has a selection of plans to suit new, feature-rich smartphones and plans to accommodate even that old flip phone you keep around for emergencies. Petro-Canada Mobile offers 30-day prepaid plans and pay-as-you-go options that last up to a full year.

Petro-Canada Mobile Pay-as-You-Go Plans

We like this option for people who don't use their phones much, chat just a bit from time-to-time or need a phone for emergencies. Once you've activated a phone with Petro-Canada Mobile, you buy a top-up card and load up your phone. Top-up cards are available from $25 to $100. It's important to note that the more you spend upfront, the longer your top-up will last.

  • $25 - 120 days
  • $30 - 120 days
  • $40 - 120 days
  • $50 - 180 days
  • $100 - 365 days

Loading up an old device with a $25 card gives you an emergency cell phone for up to three months. Investing $100 upfront gives you a full year of security all for under $9/month.

Make sure to watch your balance once you've loaded up your account. Nationwide talk time is $0.30 per minute, $0.55/minute to the U.S. and outgoing texts are $0.15 each (incoming texts are free) for Canada and the U.S. Other rates to be aware of include $0.35 for international texts, $0.50 for picture texts, and $1.25/month will be deducted for the 911 Recovery Fee.

Data costs $0.15/MB which doesn't sound like much, but it can add up quickly. Watching just one music video on YouTube can cost as much as $7.50!

Can You Use Your Current Phone?

New rules in Canada help consumers get the most out of their old phones. While buying something new is exciting, if you already have a phone you love then keep using it. Petro-Canada Mobile will sell you a $10 SIM card that works with many older phones. Contact Petro-Canada to find out if your phone will work on their network and save more. If you're with another carrier, you have the right to unlock your phone and even keep your phone number when you move to a new wireless company.
