Text Telus Launches Data Management for Family Sharing Plans over image of a smartphone with graphs

Article Summary

Responding to one of the biggest requests about Family Data Sharing plans, Telus has launched a Data Manager that lets you set your own data caps on each phone line on your account.

Family data sharing plans are popular across Canada since they let you bundle multiple phone lines on one bill. While everyone in your family has their own phone number, they share a large bucket of data. Bell, Rogers and Telus have been using family sharing plans for years to help customers afford their premium service.

The benefit of Family Sharing plans for the carrier is that it makes it more difficult to change carriers; like when you reach the end of a 2-year contract. If you still have other phone lines on the account then it can cost more to break it up. There are benefits to the customer, but data sharing has always had one critical weakness. If there's one heavy data user in your house then that can ruin the fun for everyone.

For example, you share a 12GB data pack across cell phones for you, your spouse, and your two teens. One teen goes on a weekend trip and streams Netflix the whole time, eating up 6GB of data. That leaves only an average of 1.5GB for everyone to use that month. Data overages can easily run up to $100.

Launched just last week, all Telus customers with a Family Sharing plan should have access to the new Data Manager tool within a month. With it, you can control how much data each user gets. Each user gets their own data cap set by the account holder. Overage protection can be enabled or disabled on a per-user basis. Each users data connection can even be shut off completely (until they clean their room!).

Other companies like Freedom Mobile offer large data caps for each unique phone line, and unlimited throttled data when they go over that cap. Even so, Telus has Canada's largest, fastest and most reliable network and now with the Data Management tool you can control overage costs and keep your monthly budget under control.

How To Save With Family Sharing Plans

Telus is one of Canada's premiere mobile providers, but their services don't come cheap. By bundling multiple phone lines on one Telus account, all lines get unlimited Canada-wide calling and share data from one data pack. Now with Data Management Tools you never have to worry about going over your data cap just because the kids are watching YouTube or playing Fortnite. Rogers and Bell may soon launch similar data management tools for their Family Plans, but you can also find discounts by combining lines on one bill from Koodo, Fido, Virgin Mobile and even Freedom Mobile with their unlimited data.
