Rogers vs Bell

Rogers and Bell are two of the largest carriers in the country. Despite the fierce competition inherent in this, their plan offerings are pretty similar. For shared plans, they're pretty close to identical once you get up to the 7/9GB range. They also have a similar range of phones.

Below we've listed a quick comparison of both carriers with their pricing for unlimited nationwide calls for most of Canada, excluding Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Quebec. Those three provinces tend to boast much cheaper prices and larger data inclusions across the board.

If you'd like to view any of the plans, including ones from SK, MB, or QC, you can follow the button link under each category, and adjust your location from the drop-down at the top of the next screen, if necessary.

1GB is around-about the entry point for most users. It's enough to handle light daily browsing and social media usage, as well as instant messaging services (as long as you go light on sending/receiving images). For anything else you'll probably want to either restrict yourself until you're on a WiFi network, or go for a larger plan. Things like music streaming, video streaming, and even a lot of online gaming should be kept to extremely minimal use. It's recommended that you disable auto-play video on any of your apps, and try to avoid downloading or updating

2.5GB is going to be plenty for a lot of folk. You can do a fair bit of daily browsing and social media usage without too much worry, and instant messaging is generally pretty safe, unless you go absolutely wild with the images and GIFs. You can even stream music on a light daily basis, although if you do keep one eye on your usage meter. It's still best to stay away from any high-res video, and switching off video auto-play is advisable, but you can hit up the occasional short vid without too much worry. Updating and downloading large applications should be restricted to times when you're on WiFi, but smaller apps should be fine.

5GB is where you can start to breathe easy. You can stream music on a daily basis, and even hit up a fair few YouTube videos to spice up your daily commute without too much worry. Updating, or downloading large apps shouldn't really be a problem, and all that light browsing/social media/sending images stuff shouldn't make much of a difference.

Note: if you do all of these things, you can still hit your cap pretty easily, but if your online focus is only on one or two of the heavier services then you should be fine.

Bell (7GB)

These are massive plans. If you need a plan this big for yourself, you probably know why. Otherwise, it's likely that you're looking to go in to a shared plan with someone else. If that's the case, make sure you divide the data amounts by the number of people, and figure out if that will be enough data for each of you before you commit.

If the reason you're going for a heavy-hitting plan is that you want Netflix access when out and about, you're out of luck. Even a 9GB plan will be eaten up pretty quickly by long HD video content. Use caution, or grab a bigger plan, if this is your intention.
